Andy Reid Franchise Tags Wendy’s

Kansas City chiefs head coach Andy Reid confirmed Monday that he has applied the franchise tag to Wendy’s in response to the restaurant chain’s consistently strong quarterly numbers.

Reid, known for his gifted offensive mind, was long expected to make the move as his local Wendy’s faced the possibility of relocation. The Chief’s head coach made it a top priority this offseason to retain his top hamburger contributor before another coach could visit with the fast food giant.

“I do have some reservations, you know, not really wanting to end up like an Arby’s,” Wendy’s spokesperson Brian Akers said. “But we spoke the other day, and it sounds like he may want to bring back the Biggie size so we can compete a little more with the West Coast offenses that In-N-Out Burger uses, and that’s really exciting.”

Experts say Wendy’s could command as much as $4.6 billion if it were allowed to hit the open market. Wendy’s is one of the fastest growing restaurant chains in the country, achieving 4.8% U.S. sales growth in fiscal year 2020, earning a second straight Pro Bowl selection, and supplying Reid with countless critical game-time Junior Bacon Cheeseburgers. Both sides will have until the summer to reach a long-term deal, and Akers would like to see Reid make a bigger commitment to the chain, such as agreeing to buy more Feed-the-Fam Deals instead of only selecting a la carte options.

“They make the best hamburgers I have ever had in my life,” Reid said. “They use fresh, never frozen beef and provide tremendous value up and down their menu. I look forward to walking into training camp next year and seeing them toss a load of fries into a deep fryer and absolutely smother a Dave’s Double in gooey American cheese.”

Reid added that he expects no surprises in training camp as he has been tracking Wendy’s offseason progress through daily Grubhub orders.
