The Incredible Story Of One NBA Player’s Journey Through Stable, Middle-Class Upbringing

Chandler Parsons learned early on that the universe would do anything to stop him from achieving his dream of playing in the NBA. As he explained during an exclusive one-on-one interview with Sports Riot, one of the biggest obstacles he faced on his journey to becoming a professional basketball player was his supportive, college-educated parents.

“My father forced me to get a job during high school even though we didn’t need the money,” said Parsons, fighting back tears. “I worked at CVS for two years. I’ve never forgiven him.”

The worst part, he added, was that the man who was always around if Chandler needed him–his father–demanded that 25% of his salary be put toward an emergency college fund.

“As if it weren’t obvious that I’d be making millions of dollars one day,” he said.

The unconditional love from Chandler’s parents wasn’t the only roadblock in his way. His childhood was filled with countless teachers and tutors who sacrificed hundreds of hours of their personal time to guarantee his academic success.

“They never gave up on me, even after I made it clear that I didn’t give a shit,” said Parsons, his defiant expression failing to mask his pain. “It was so fucking annoying.”

But the nine-year NBA veteran has an inspiring message for kids who find themselves in similar situations.

“Whether it’s being forced to take out the recycling, being encouraged to stay away from drugs and crime, or constantly listening to your parents tell you how proud you make them, don’t worry. There are good people out there who won’t treat you this way.”

When asked if he had any regrets about his upbringing, Chandler said no. “I take pride in the fact that I made it through all of life’s obstacles without anyone’s help.”
