Climate Pledge Arena Requests Fans Break Down Box Seats Before Recycling
As Seattle gears up for its inaugural NHL season at Climate Pledge Arena, the venue, whose naming rights were purchased by Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, is taking a bold approach to reducing its carbon footprint by requesting that fans break down box seats before recycling them upon their exit.
“Our goal is to ensure every fan knows their seat is made of 100% recyclable Amazon cardboard boxes,” said David Estes, a spokesperson for the project. “Whether you’re getting up to leave, use our communal bathrooms, or simply to harvest the herbs you planted in the concessions garden, we ask that you dispose of your seat in a proper receptacle and take a new one from one of our carbon-free ushers.”
Further demonstrating the organization’s commitment to fighting climate change, Estes said the arena will be demolished after every season then frantically rebuilt from scratch using a synthetic blend of prior arena builds and recycled arena pieces sourced from around the world.
The policy will lead to millions in tax write-offs for Bezos, who vowed to fully transition to compostable workers by the 2032-2033 season.
