Law & Order: SVU Announces Crossover Episode With NBC’s Olympic Coverage Of Women’s Gymnastics

NBC announced in a press release this Friday that they will be producing a two-week crossover event between “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and the network’s coverage of women’s gymnastics during the 2021 summer Olympics in Tokyo.

The announcement comes on the heels of several high-profile sex crimes that have plagued USA women’s gymnastics, as well as the absolute ratings bonanzas that NBC crossover events have historically proven to be.

“This is a spectacular opportunity to merge two tentpole NBC brands,” said NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell. “I mean, the horrific events in women’s gymnastics combined with a crime drama inspired by real sex criminals? Talk about a win-win!”

SVU showrunners are equally excited. “After 22 years, the format was starting to get a little stale. How cool is it going to be when Olivia takes down these gymnastics pervs on live TV?” said SVU creator and executive producer Dick Wolf. “It’s a shame we’re only getting two weeks. There’s enough here for another 22 seasons, at least.”

The crossover will address the myriad crimes perpetrated by the employees of USA women’s gymnastics against their young female athletes—all in real time during NBC’s live coverage. Bob Costas and gymnast Gabby Douglas are set to appear, while former Today Show host Matt Lauer is rumored to make a cameo via old NBC office security footage.

“As long as USA gymnastics keeps hiring sex predators, I’ll keep getting a free trip to the summer Olympics every four years,” said “SVU” star Mariska Hargitay.  “Makes you wish these things happened more often!”
