NBA Retires Carmelo Anthony

Citing the 10-time All-Star’s declining skill set and reluctance to take on a smaller role with a team, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver announced Monday that the league has determined to hang Carmelo Anthony’s sneakers up for him.

“It’s been one hell of a ride for Carmelo, and letting go won’t be easy,” Silver said. “Unfortunately, his body can no longer handle the rigors of an 82-game season, let alone a single practice.”

When asked whether Anthony would consider returning to the league at some point, Silver insisted that was the last thing that should be on the two-time gold medalist’s mind.

“Basketball just isn’t a priority for Carmelo anymore,” Silver said. “At this stage in his life, he should be spending time with his family.”

With this move, the Syracuse product becomes the first player to be retired by the league since 1991, when David Stern called it quits for Magic Johnson following the star point guard’s distracting HIV diagnosis.
