Ominous Carving In Shawshank Penalty Box Reads “Brooks Was Here…So Was Probert”
While making the rounds at Shawshank Ice Arena last Friday, prison custodian Jason Broton came across an ominous carving outside the penalty box reading “Brooks was here…so was Probert.”
“Those two spent nearly their entire adult careers in the box—Brooks for high-sticking, of course, and Bob Probert for, well, everything,” remarked Broton, adding that guys penalized that long don’t fare too well back on the ice without hope.
The carvings are believed to date back to sometime after Probert notoriously told a committee of referees that “rehabilitation” for his enforcing days was “a bullshit term.” There are reports of Probert working at a local grocery store after being let back on the ice, but some old teammates believe he lives elsewhere.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if Bob is off on some beach in Canada building a boat with longtime ‘Bruise Brother’ Joey Kocur,” said Nicklaus Lidstrom. Kocur’s whereabouts have been unknown since famously tunneling out of Joe Lewis Arena’s penalty box and crawling through 500 yards of dip spit to freedom using nothing but an ice skate.
