Dr. Andrews Performs Tommy John Surgery In 40 Seconds At Surgeon Combine

The annual AMA Surgeon Combine wrapped up this week with a spectacular performance by Dr. James Andrews, who wowed scouts by performing Tommy John surgery in 40 seconds flat.

The previous record of 57 minutes was shattered by Andrews, who is almost a lock to be taken by Cincinnati General Hospital with the top pick in the upcoming draft.

“He’s an impressive, smart guy. We think he is ready to do surgery at the pro level right now,” said Cincinnati General Chief of Services James Gaffney.

Andrews’ record-setting performance has experts thinking he has franchise surgeon potential. “We believe he is the type of surgeon that an organization can build their team around,” Gaffney added.

While it’s no doubt Andrews is a superb talent, scouts have previously questioned his bedside manner. Andrews famously likes to show off after a perfect incision with a scalpel flip, and he has often been criticized for stitching up patients with a suture that resembles his autograph.

But a performance like this should put these issues to rest, which is also what Andrews has prescribed for his patient because despite the record speed of the surgery, the recovery will still be a grueling 12-14 months.  

The consensus is Cincinnati General and Andrews are a perfect marriage, but rumors have already surfaced that Cincinnati General is taking calls on possible trades for the top pick. One source has confirmed that Miami-Dade County Hospital has offered a veteran OBGYN, an up-and-coming urologist, and cash considerations for the opportunity to draft Andrews.

“It’d take a chief physician’s ransom for us to make a deal,” Gaffney said.
