Massive Spike In Mets’ World Series Betting Odds Linked Back To Single Sarcastic Reddit Comment
The world of sports betting was thrown a massive curveball recently, and while the recent spike in betting on the Mets’ winning the World Series may have seemed random, research indicates that the entire improbable scenario can be traced to a single reddit user on r/NewYorkMets, u/DM_ME_ARODS_BALLS, who posted a sarcastic comment about this “finally [being] the year,” thus sparking massive panic-betting behavior by the rest of the sub.
“He posted that comment at 9:57 a.m., and within seconds, the odds dropped like a pop-up fly out of Luis Castillo’s hands,” said r/NewYorkMets admin u/bloated_raccoon_anus. “I personally yeeted like, 50K within the first three minutes. And as soon as I can find my damn Bitcoin password, I’ll be dumping everything else into NYM as well! Diamond gloves, baby!”
Controversy erupted late Thursday evening when popular betting site FanDuel shut down all new bets on the Mets’ victory, but still allowed previous bettors the opportunity to rescind their wagers. While FanDuel claimed this was to counter clear betting market manipulation, outraged customers insisted that the staggering odds change surge was based on a genuine, heartfelt belief in the long-struggling New York team.
“I’m not saying it’s the best franchise, but I remember what it was like to be a Mets fan as a kid, and I do think there are some solid foundations there,” said fellow Reddit user u/suck_deez_Metz. “Plus, Yankees and Dodgers fans have been corking the little guys for years, so it’s only fair we return the favor!”
When reached for comment, u/DM_ME_ARODS_BALLS gave a statement claiming that “no serious person” could have interpreted their initial post at face value, arguing that everyone from Ken Rosenthal to Trevor Bauer could obviously see that a Mets World Series run had no basis in reality. Even when faced with this admission, however, r/NewYorkMets has adamantly refused to stop placing bets.
“What can I say?” grinned u/suck_deez_Metz, “We like the team.”
