Sadly, sometimes teams have to change their original name due to it being found offensive, or demeaning in today’s society. And, some organizations with love in their hearts and only the best of intentions, like the Waco Wackos, have to change their name because “society” rules them “problematic”.
THE NEW ORLEANS HURRICANES
Just days before Hurricane Katrina would make landfall on the Gulf Coast, oil multimillionaire Richard Blanchet decided to cash in on all of the “hurricane-mania” sweeping the city. He named his brand new AAA ball club, The Hurricanes. Unfortunately, Katrina was even more devastating than Blanchet could have predicted. Fear not! He recouped $725 Mil in insurance money that bankrupted New Orleans.
OKLAHOMA CITY BOMBERS
Originally named after the Oklahoma City High School’s offensive scheme being that of a deep play “bomb” type offense. Despite the name predating the 1995 tragedy by thirty years, it was officially changed the year of the state title run in ‘97 when coach Thomas accidentally said in a press tour, “We’re going to bomb every inch of Oklahoma.”
THE CALIFORNIA DROUGHT AND WILDFIRES AND EARTHQUAKE THAT WILL EVENTUALLY TAKE US ALL
Young hotshot Silicon Valley entrepreneur, Bristol Duvet, wanted his minor league hockey team to actually stand for something. He didn’t care that the name wouldn’t “fit on your little hat, bruh.” Duvet wanted to spread the message that, “Global warming is real and dangerous, and also earthquakes are real and dangerous, and also life is meaningless and dangerous, and also you will die.”
THE DALLAS GRASSY KNOLLS
The original name of the Dallas Cowboys is the “GrassyKnolls” as many may remember it was taken all the way to the Supreme Court and deemed unconstitutional to name your team after a conspiracy resulting in a presidential assassination. Dallas eventually relented and went with the “Cowboys”. Many like the name, but some locals feel it doesn’t fully capture their vibe.
