Hear Us Out: Term Limits For Quarterbacks
Quarterbacks hold an important position in American society. Far more Americans look to Patrick Mahomes for leadership than George Washington. However, unlike presidents, quarterbacks can serve in their roles indefinitely. Instead of permitting this gridiron tyranny to continue, we must chart a better path forward by installing term limits for quarterbacks.
Some might argue such term limits would be unfair. After all, if a quarterback can continue to perform his duties, why should he have to leave the pocket? Well, shouldn’t the quarterbacks leading us align with our modern offensive values? Some QBs playing today have been around since the advent of the T formation. These men can’t be counted on to run a West Coast offense, let alone execute RPOs.
Why, you ask, if term limits are so vital, did the Founding Fathers of Football institute no such measures? The truth is that never in their wildest dreams did they imagine quarterbacks might one day play into their 40s. Back during the leather-helmet era, a QB would have been lucky to complete two full seasons before retiring to his factory job.
That brings us to Tom Brady. Genetics, modern medicine, and the paleo diet have enabled the Buccaneers quarterback to extend his prime indefinitely. For 22 seasons we have suffered under his terrible rule, and yet he only seems to be growing stronger as he ages. The time to fight back is now. Through term limits we can deflate his influence once and for all.
