Punter Wishes Just Once Fans Would Cheer When He Comes Out
Miami Dolphins’ Jake Bailey has had enough. For years, he’s watched offenses, defense, field goal kickers, cheerleaders, army veterans, and inflatable Dolphins all get cheered on an NFL field. Just once in the entire history of punting, Jake Bailey wanted the booing to stop!
“I’ve done everything other players do to get some love around here. I’ve run the ball, I’ve passed the ball, I even died on the field and was miraculously resuscitated. Nothing!” said Bailey, “One day, these ungrateful heathens will call on me for the game-winning punt. We’ll see who’s booing then!”
Punters since time immemorial have tried various ways to elicit cheers from the crowd. In 1979, Hall of Fame Punter Ray Guy would enter the offensive huddle only to receive more boos once refs found too many men on the field. Several times, Jeff Feagles brought his wife to his games, only for her to naturally start booing.
“I wanted to cheer my husband, but I just swept up in booing that loser ass punter!. Also, I kind of forgot what team he was on,” said Michelle Feagles, “I’m ashamed to say that it got to a point that every time he entered the room, I started booing, saying he sucks, and threw a beer at him.”
Later in the game, Bailey tried to fake a punt, only for his leg to snap in half once pummeled by a defensive tackle. While being carted off for what clearly was a career-ending injury, he heard cheers, and a single tear rolled down his cheek.
