Senior PGA Tour Put On Hold After Yet Another Caddy Run Over By Golf Cart

When the PGA Department of Motor Vehicles approved golf carts for players over age 50, they sought to provide the game’s legends with a sense of independence as they sailed into their twilight years.

But that’s now in doubt.

PGA officials announced today the postponement of all remaining dates of the senior PGA TOUR Champions Tournament after yet another caddy was run over by a speeding golf cart. Marc Bowers, 19, and his bag of Bridgestone clubs remain in critical condition after a 48v cart rocketed down the fairway at 15 mph and pinned them underneath the cart.

“I didn’t see a stop sign, plus, he’s young. He’ll be fine,” said Robert Withers, who remains in Phoenix Country Club custody for the hit-and-run on a par four. “Now I’m stuck here waiting for a hearing from a scoring judge who’s going to give me a two-stroke penalty and threaten to take away my cart.”

“It’s just a caddy!” Withers added, noting that golfers his age are fully capable of selecting their own clubs. In response to the numerous cart incidents, the PGA is asking U.S. Amateur participants to speak with elderly golfers about forfeiting their cart keys and considering public transportation from hole to hole or simply retiring to a mini-golf course.
