Rudy Ruettiger has taken his notoriously unsuccessful football career and turned it into a living as a motivational speaker. Isn’t that neat? More impressive is not only was Rudy able to do this while being not good at football, he was able to do this while being not good at anything. Not business, not art, not teaching — not even his Tweets!

Rudy is about as average as they make them and still the man is walking into auditoriums all across the country filled with high school students chanting “Rudy, Rudy, Rudy!” making a strong case for one of the greatest underdog stories of our time.“Wow, I’ve been inspired to do nothing necessarily well,” said sophomore, Angel Ramirez, after seeing Rudy speak to her class. “And I can’t wait to get rejected by Notre Dame three times, like my hero Rudy did, until they feel sorry enough to throw me a bone!”

Indeed, Rudy is known for giving people a sense of belonging in spaces they do not belong. Like at Notre Dame, where he wasted the coaching staff’s time and patience as he showed such ineptitude for the game he did nothing but get in the way. Now he’s spreading this message to people all across the world that it’s not about talent, or that it’s not about being good at something, or that it’s not about even eventually being good at something. Instead, it’s about showing up regardless even if that means being a fucking burden.

There is no underdog story that stands the test of time quite like this one. Can any of you relate to Tom Brady, or Lebron James? Absolutely not. Chances are you’re a Rudy, and there’s no better person out there to make you feel like being inadequate ain’t all that bad quite like this guy!
