“Ted Lasso” Golden Globes Win Inspires World Soccer Fandom To Finally Start Caring About SNL
Soccer fans around the world have been inspired by “Ted Lasso’s” recent Golden Globes win to put aside their prejudice against American sketch comedy and cheer on “Saturday Night Live.”
The once-elusive demographic that has historically considered American sketch comedy “super boring,” “too foreign,” and “not nearly as good” as their domestic comedy, has ballooned SNL’s ratings to a twenty-year high.
“I used to ask myself, ‘Why is nothing happening for 90 minutes?’” one FC Barcelona fan opined about his old thoughts on watching SNL. “The format didn’t make sense. Sketch? Musical guests? Fake news? I didn’t understand the rules. I wrote it off until ‘Ted Lasso.’”
Other soccer fans echoed similar sentiments. “The show is mostly misses with few big scores. ‘How boring,’ I thought! I wanted non-stop action, like Mr. Bean,” said one Liverpool devotee. “Plus, I don’t really like foreigners.”
American sketch comedy also had to face an uphill battle with soccer fans who considered the style of humor “for kids,” noting that only non-funny children stick with the format, while the comedically talented go on to do “real” comedy like sitcoms, stand-up, and clowning.
Since “Ted Lasso’s” win, however, SNL message boards have been alight with discussion — from speculation about whom Lorne’s going to cut, hire, or bench to detailed cast analyses. Likewise, international fans have trekked to New York City to watch live tapings, many donning signs and homemade jerseys in support of their favorite cast members.
“I’ve come to call it the ‘beautiful comedy,’” said the Liverpool fan of SNL.
Lorne Michaels told reporters he was delighted with SNL’s new fanbase, but could do without the brawls and rolls of flaming toilet paper being thrown on stage during live broadcast.
